Have Fendi gone too far?

As far as luxurious dressing goes, Fendi are always at the forefront. Extravagant pieces with a classic, timeless feel, the Fendi woman can have anything she wants - at any expense. Why, however, does this have to be at the expense of a whole host of harmless animals lives?

The A/W collection at Milan Fashion Week showcased enough fur to make even the most hardened of souls wince, and no animal was safe. Antelope, mink, crocodile and even goat pelts were seen draped around the gorgeous primitive looking models with wanton abandon as they strode along the catwalk, with high collars and heavy shawls cinched in by thick leather corset belts.
Partly what I find so dissapointing about this collection is the beauty of the designs, as no one can deny they are gorgeous. One of my personal favourite details was the attention paid to the models shoulders, from shift dresses with full rounded cap sleeves to coats and jackets with chic oversized panels protruding from the shoulder, it created a striking feminine silhouette with a sexy androgynous strength behind it.

Another highlight of the collection was of course the accessories, in particular the handbags. This timeless design was shown in a variety of different shapes and textures - each one more desirable than the last. The bright pop of yellow through the sides of this bag brought a lightness to an otherwise muted palette, injecting life into this wintery collection.

As much as there are aspects of this gorgeous collection that I think will become huge commercial hits (I'm predicting every high street brand will have a replica of that handbag!), I still think Lagerfeld and Fendi have gone too far with this collection. I think that amount of fur is unnecessary, and as a fashion industry that is supposed to be reformed after the uproar caused by the size zero debate, I think more focus should be placed upon the issues surrounding wearing fur. All clothes look better if you are not also wearing a guilty conscience.
